September Architalks: Ar. Cabahug on how Topographical Setting Affects Functionality and Cost-Efficiency

In coming up with a design, topography is just one of the many factors that needs to be considered. Basically, it is referred to as the “arrangement of the natural and artificial physical features of area”.

Topographical elements are also vital in site analysis. When topography and architecture work together, the structure is guaranteed to be robust and long-lasting.

CP Design and Architecture, a reputable Architecture Firm in Davao City, is on the process of designing a beach resort in the pristine sands somewhere in Davao Oriental. One of its Project Architects, Ar. Lyndon Cabahug, shares how considering the topographical setting of an area is important to achieve a functional and cost-effective designs.

Determine what design suits the area best.

“It is important to ask the client of his/her vision”, Ar. Lyndon said. This way, a greater and common understanding is achieved among different stakeholders. On the said project, “a place of escape” is the main concept the client wants to portray. With this in mind, the team came up with a goal design that could provide a sense of privacy, exclusiveness, and coziness to guests.

Work with that vision.

Setting a goal is necessary, even in Architecture, as it will serve as the team’s light in completing the process”, Mr. Lyndon shared. Moreover, it gives you focus, helps you measure progress, and keeps you motivated. In order to have achieve the “place of escape”, whites and earth colors are used. The roofs are also considered as the dominant feature where the material used is cogon to get that softened look. These softening features were done so as not stand out much from the landscape.

The design of the resort depends on the landscape. It is important to not only create an environment inside but also outside of the site. This will set up the mood of the ambience the place wants to embody.

Go for concentric buildings.

Having a flat construction site seems a great advantage not until you realize how you can make every building stand out. Unlike sloping terrains, you cannot layer buildings where views can be seen. This is one of the major challenges: how do you make every building visible on a flat surface? The placement and orientation of buildings is something to look out for.

“This is why we decided to go for a concentric layout”, Ar. Cabahug said. With this layout, you can each building an unobstructed view. This will also save you a sum of money as one no longer needs to spend on additional sand and gravel just to elevate said buildings. Additionally, the layout used plays a vital role in the overall functionality and success of the design.

Resort and Hotel Architectural Design sure is a long road. But sticking to the steps would do the trick. In-depth research and analysis, resonating the design with the context of the site, and environmental considerations must be done and applied.
In our locality, renowned Davao Region Architecture Design Services abound of which one is CP Design and Architecture. Its developments are focused on cultural preservation and community progress that brings to life your dream visions.
