September Architalks: Ar. Lyndon Cabahug on Incorporating Physics and Astrology in Pusan Point Science Discovery Center

Science discovery centers are like paradise to children and child-at-heart alike. Who would not gush over a museum primarily devoted to science?

To experience the best of science, and have a profound understanding of some of its most complex fields of study such as astronomy and physics, you don’t have to leave Davao Region; we actually have our own located at the easternmost part  of the Philippines – the Pusan Point Science Discovery Center.

CP Design and Architecture is a reputable Davao Museum Architecture and Designer committed to specializing in design for educational, cultural and historical institutions – and we can’t express enough how humbled we are to have been part of this project. With our team of professional architects, engineers, and interior designers, we were able to pull off Pusan Point Science Discovery Center’s quality Ecotourism Architecture Design

Today, one of CPDA’s seasoned architects, Ar. Lyndon Cabahug, shares his insights on how they were able to accurately present and incorporate the principles of Physics and Astrology in the design process of the project.

“Since Pusan is popularly known as “where the sun rises first”, the main consideration was really the Sun”, he remarked.

Other than the challenge of going through subjects which can be highly technical for some, the design that the team had to come up with was focused on diffusing the harsh sunlight especially at noon when the scorching heat is oftentimes overwhelming. The building’s main plan was to make it fan-shaped as an abstraction on the sun’s form during sunrise.

“The prominence of sunlight in this area was something the team had to use to our advantage. This is the main reason that the interior's central theme was focused on the sun. We had to keep in mind that the correlation of overall structural design and interiors will be our vantage point to create a seamless flow – in terms of content, circulation, and guest movement. These initial factors and decisions paved the way to play around “Energy” as a main theme.” explained Ar. Cabahug.

The museum part of the building is located on the second floor.  As you enter the building, you can see the “Energies” where the displays are based.

The following can be seen on the displays; Earth which comprises the wind, weather, and geothermal energy, Space and Astronomy which comprises heavenly bodies, gravity, and the sun. From the Sun, it will have a transition to light energy. From then on, other forms of energies (mechanical, sound, electrical, chemical, etc) are then presented.

“A design concept is the basic DNA of a project”

Without a well defined design concept, the team would not be able to have a clear picture of how the structure should look like. We had to be extra visual and visionary in this case. On the other hand, having a seamless and cohesive display theme made all future decisions easier for the CP Design and Architecture team.

The entire experience for this project and incorporating physics and astrology in the project was not a walk in the park, considering this was one of the firsts that Ar. Lyndon Cabahug personally handled the firm. However, everything was worth it.

“I can say it’s a well-designed museum where visitors can expect an immersive experience.”, Ar. Lyndon said.

Architecture is experiential. If the people do not get an architect’s design intent and when designs are not correlated, then they’d have a bad experience of the space. They cannot enjoy architecture.   Every person has its own aesthetic sense – this may be good to me, but bad for others. The latter is what’s experienced when designs are not cohesive. It gives them an unpleasant experience.

With developments focused on cultural preservation and community progress, CP Design and Architecture is best at Park and Tourist Attraction Design and Planning Services as it brings life to your vision through the power of design.
